I would like to wish everyone a really Happy New Year. I feel incredibly privileged to be in the position I am in, its an honour.

As I am sure you are aware, we are coming to the end of our centenary celebrations for Women in British Police and there have been some wonderful presentations and events around the country where the undeniable efforts of women officers past and present have been celebrated.

It is now 'onward and upward' and we need to grasp the momentum and continue to drive towards the future, both for the UK and abroad where women's status within policing is less secure and harder fought.

In the UK, and personally speaking, I have found (in my almost 27yrs ) that the time that I was most successful was when I was most determined. I believed in my own abilities and as I looked around at those in the positions and ranks I wanted to fulfil, I knew that I could at least be as good or in most cases better than them. This isn't arrogance, but confidence. I can honestly say that I have never achieved anything on the back of anyone else's work and know that I have stayed true to my values.

Its important, as women police officers ascend up the ranks that they continue to look behind them and pave the way for the next generation of women officers who are also determined and committed to make that leap.

As a coach and a mentor, I take this position and responsibility very seriously. I provide time, space and opportunities to those who I feel have the resilience and skill to attempt to reach these goals. This is not a completely selfless act, anyone who is able to mentor or coach will know. Seeing the light going on and the officers realisation that their self perceived potential was far lower than they are actually capable of, is incredible.

If you don't do it already, try it. Mould the next generation, be an active part of the future of policing.

have a great year

with kindest wishes

I've had a great time and got to know some of you when you came to conference or Board Meeting etc. Its been great representing you all on the Board and at various events in Europe. I hope my replacement, Annita, has as much fun as I have had.

Meanwhile a reminder to all UK members- the Motor Source Group offers amazing discounts on new and used cars as well as earning IAWP £100 for each sale! I'm just buying a new Golf through them and they have been very helpful. I know others have used them and we all agree, you can't get cheaper than their offers. TRUE! Go to www,motorsourcegroup.com for more details. And don't forget to mention IAWP when you make your enquiry.

My very best wishes for your future and hope to see you if not in Cardiff, then Barcelona next year.

All the best.

I do apologise for not updating the blog for months, but as you know I am conference co-director for Cardiff IAWP2015 training conference. So I am more than a little busy. Please forgive me for having my mind and time occupied with other issues. However if you need something, please email me on jaeger_julia@btinternet.com.

This will be my last blog as regional coordinator for region 13. After 6 years I'm moving on. I feel it is more appropriate that a serving officer should do the role and I've been retired 4 years now, so I'm getting out of touch with current Policing. Its been a fantastic 6 years where I've represented IAWP in various conferences and met some fantastic policewomen & support staff from all over the world as well as Europe. Its certainly a role worth considering if you want to develop IAWP membership and have a passion for women in law enforcement.

My successor is Annita Clarke, 2013 IAWP Officer of the Year and a serving Inspector in Bedford, UK. She will be at Cardiff and so take the time to meet her. By the way there's still time to register if you haven't booked a place. Over 500 policewomen from all over the world have registered already. So if you've never been to an IAWP conference before, now's the time to come as it the first time in Europe for 10 years. And here again next year in Barcelona. Twice in two years - so no excuses! I am staying with IAWP being the Recording Secretary for Board meetings for the next 3 years. So still around and supporting Annita.

Meanwhile some news from the last 6 months. The Early Board meeting took place in a very snowy Denver USA in February. Minutes are on the main IAWP website. A team went to New York for the UN's annual CSW women's conference to speak on human trafficking. Featuring Jane Townsley and Patience Quaye from Ghana with others.

I attended the annual awards Luncheon for British Association for Women in Police and met some extraordinary women. I had the privilege of submitting all the winners to IAWP for their annual awards and know there will be some amazing women in Cardiff to be honoured for their outstanding performances. Sorry - names are embargoed until conference. But why not submit someone next time who you think is performing above average or has done something extra special? We can always advise you how to fill in the forms and I know it works!

So I'm signing off now for the last time. I wish you a long and happy career. Enjoy it and keep up the IAWP membership so you are connected with some of the world's most fantastic policewomen.

Best Regards,

IAWP Region 13http://www.blogger.com/profile/13061266811798361233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575709961996259965.post-61881828173729422972014-12-26T07:40:00.000-08:002014-12-26T07:40:10.104-08:00Christmas Greetings from Region 13 Greetings to all region 13 members and other readers. At the end of the year its time to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Especially as 2015 is so important for us as we host the centenary conference of IAWP in Cardiff from 23rd - 27th August 2015. Have you registered yet? You save yourself £50 by booking before January 1st 2015. Don't worry if this is your first conference as you will soon get into the swing of it and enjoy making new friends as well as getting great training. If you cannot afford to attend, how about applying for the Scholarship when that is advertised? That pays all the expenses and registration fee for the recipient. Several European officers have been that fortunate in the recent past. Could it be you next time? Don't forget if you have any ideas for training, please don't hesitate to get back to me as soon as possible as the training programme is nearly complete.

It is also election year which you should have picked up from the latest magazine and IAWP Emails. I'm not standing for Region 13 this time so its open for any of you to stand. The role involves attending Board meetings at your own expense (but we do understand if you cannot make a meeting), writing this blog, keeping in contact with members, contributing articles to the magazine, offering adivce to officers, members, Police Forces, etc that contact you for adivce. Its a great opportunity to increase membership and your policing skills by contributing to the international Police famaily. The only qualifications are that you are a current member of IAWP and have been for at least two years. Plus attended one conference to date. I am available to mentor you. As is the 3rd Vice President, whoever that will be after the elections. I am hoping to still be on the Board as I am running for Recording Secretary for Board meetings. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you want information on the role or how to nominate yourself.

The Winnipeg conference was great fun and saw a good European contingent in attendance especially from Cardiff 2015 planning team.
Will we see you in next year's conference photos? Full details on the web site www.iawp2015.org .

There were three British recipients of IAWP awards this year. Congratulations to Inspector Hazel Brady, Northern Ireland for Commuity; Detective Constable Clare Cresswell, Warwickshire for Excellence in Performance and Police Community Support Officer Guinnie Mooneesawmy, London for Civilian Achievement. So why are there British winners every year? Because we enter every year. Our nominations are all the winners from the British Association for Women in Policing annual awards. Your country may not have an awards scheme, but you can nominate anyone who fits the critieria. They do not have to be a member of IAWP. Do you have an outstanding female colleague atwork? Why not nominate them? The nominations will close towards the end of March 2015. Have a go this year and you never know what you might achieve.

Talking of Britain, congratulations as they celebrate 100 years of British Policewomen in 2015. This will be marked with an exhibition in Cardiff. So when were the first policewomen appointed in your country? IAWP will also hold an exhibition to mark their centenary. Maybe you can contribute to it. Further details will come out from the new Historian in the New Year via emails and the magazine. Watch this space!

All thats left is for me to wish you and your family a very happy new year. Keep up the good work in your stations and keep safe.

Best Regards,

First of all, a great big welcome to new members for Region 13 including in no particular order: - Charlotte Deans (UK), Guinnie Moonesawmy (UK), Jan Medcalf (UK), Jane Brookes (UK), Hazel Brady (Northern Ireland), Amanda Summerfield (UK), Carol Hayman (UK), Clare Cresswell (UK), Cornelius Sal (Netherlands), Karin Hemminger (Germany), Carolyn Davies (UK) and Suzie Frank (UK). Welcome to the organisation and enjoy your membership.

I can hardly believe the summer is almost gone and Winnipeg 2014 is just around the corner. A month today I shall be in Toronto with Myra James sightseeing and preparing to go to the late Board Meeting and Annual Conference. Great fun as always. I look forward to meeting as many members from Europe as possible at the Regional meeting as well as during conference. Most of the time you can find me in or around the Cardiff 2015 stand in the exhibition hall.

Since writing the last blog I have been part of the IAWP team at the Global Summit in London to tackle post conflict sexual violence. Yes that's me behind Angelina on the cover of the latest magazine. An awesome experience and a privilege to be part of it. Always great to be out there representing the Association with colleagues from Albania, Bosnia, USA and Australia as well as the UK. We met some amazing people including William Hague, Angelina Jolie, President Atifete from Kosovo, journalists and activists; ran a great seminar and workshop for teenagers and attended great seminars ourselves. Here's hoping the future will change for victims in conflicts and that we can play our part by training Policewomen to deal with such cases and participate in peacekeeping missions with the UN, EU and others.

Now I'm getting ready for Cardiff with the planning team from South Wales Police. We are currently working on the training programme - any suggestions? Its your conference after all. The hotels are reserved and details going on the website shortly. All have been tested by Carolyn Williamson and I to make sure they are up to standard for you all. The Motorpoint is booked for the conference and the St David's Hall for the opening ceremony. Keep an eye on the website,
www.iawp2015.org, as it will be being updated regularly. Register as soon as you can. Prices rise on the 1st January and so to take advantage of the lower rate, book it now before you forget. After all its rarely in Europe and so a great opportunity to participate in an IAWP conference close to home.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the new Region 14 co-coordinator May-Britt Rinaldo from Sweden and Co- coordinators for Region 15, Edlira Zoto and Enkeleda Toska from Albania. Now I don't have to concern myself for the whole of Europe!

I look forward to hearing from you all during the coming year. I won't be standing for Region 13 again so it needs a new person to step up to the plate and take on the mantle - a smaller task than the one I took on 5 years ago. Then there are the IAWP annual awards. Every year I have submitted entries from the UK and seen British women winning annually, but I have yet to receive any entries from the rest of Europe. Its not difficult and I can always help you write up the entries, especially if English is not your first language. Don't forget the scholarship. If you can't afford to come to conference, please apply for the scholarship. Details appear on the main website and usually entries have to be submitted by the end of April of conference year. Could it be your turn next year? I also look forward to submissions for the magazine. Even if you can't fully write the article, I can help and Mel Hill from Integrity PR will write it up for you. Just send it to me.

All that remains is for for me to wish you a safe and happy career and come to Cardiff next year if you can't make Winnipeg this year.

Best Regards,

Tomorrow we are off to Excel in London to set up the IAWP stand for the PSVI Global Summit. Follow IAWP on Twitter and I'm on Twitter too at @jaeger_julia . Do keep in touch!

Looking forward to a great week and meeting William Hague, John Kerry and Angelina Jolie amongst others. Is a great achievement just to be invited there.IAWP Region 13http://www.blogger.com/profile/13061266811798361233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575709961996259965.post-8040446817369902014-04-29T11:42:00.001-07:002014-04-29T11:42:43.971-07:00Last update to 'old' Region 13 !Greetings to the full Region 13 as we split into three regions for Europe. Somewhat making my life easier as I won't be responsible for 53 countries any more! Welcome to Eda & Edlira from Albania who will be looking after the new Region 15 = Central and South East Europe. Whilst I have Western Europe still as Region 13, plus the new Region 14 = the Baltics until we get a coordinator there. However we are all one happy family in IAWP and I'll carry on with whatever comes my way. Currently planning Cardiff 2015 with colleagues from IAWP and South Wales Police. If you have any ideas about training or events you want to see included, please don't hesitate to get back to me on my conference email = julia@iawp2015.org.

Since my last blog I have been to USA twice for IAWP. First in March to New York with President Jane Townsley and 2nd Vice president Stephanie Harding to run a seminar with the UK Branch of UN Women on the role of Policewomen in international policing. Some of which you know about from the UN Police delegations at IAWP conferences and the magazine articles. This was part of the annual UN conference on the Commission of the Status of Women. This year focussing on the education of women and girls. A first for IAWP tp be a part of it and greaat to see local members from New York, New Jersey and Boston in person supporting us. At the end of MArch we took part in a follow up meeting for UN Women members in the UK held in the historic palace of Westminster which is part of Parlaiment. Another first for us. It was a sell out event and almost standing room only!

The Early Board meeting was held in Las Vegas this year with a good attendance of Board members from around the globe. Amongst other matters, the new regions were discussed, as was the budget ( it balances), need for a bid for the 2016 conference, a possible book of member's career stories to raise funds, who receives the Heritage Award, help for coordinators with family issues, IAWP history and the centenary in 2015 plus some training on strategic planning. The full minutes will be in the Members section in the near future.

This was followed by a two day regional conference put on by Fabian Brown, Tamia Dow and Janet Wilson. Including good training on leadership, gender issues, case studies and human trafficking amongst other topics. A raffle raised over $3000 dollars towards another IAWP scholarship so hopefully two ladies can attend conference and not one this time. Jane Townsley is running three 10ks to raises more scholarship funds and would appreciate you sponsoring her if you can. Her contact details are in the magazine.

Our next activity is the Global Summit in June being held in London and chaired by the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, focussing on Post Conflict Sexual Violence. IAWP will have a stand in the exhibition area to highlight what we and our members can contribute to stamping this out and investigating cases. As well as offering training through our conferences. Should be very interesting.

On behalf of the British Association for Women in Policing I have submitted seven of their award winners to the IAWP Award scheme. Some fantastic ladies doing amazing things at work! Will we keep up our success rate of at least one IAWP award recipient every year? Can I assist you submit a nomination from your country? Although closed for this year, what about next year? Do you know someone who deserves recognition? They don't have to be a member to be nominated .

I hope you enjoy reading this and are planning to come to Winnipeg in September. If there's anything else you need to know, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Its been a long time since Durban 2013, but I hope you enjoyed the photos here and in the magazine. First conference with over 1000 delegates as well as the first time in Africa. An enormous privilege to attend, participate and experience. Europe was definitely present with delegates from the UK - including four IAWP Award recipients, Germany, Albania, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Well done for making the lengthy journey. Now we aim for Winnipeg at the end of September. I know I've said it before, but if you've never been to conference before please make the effort to come along. Its not just first class training, but the opportunity to network as well as sightsee.

The biggest change for IAWP happens this year with the change from 18 to 26 regions. This will effect Europe as we are to be split into three regions: basically the north, west and east. Jane is looking for two new coordinators to run these until the 2015 elections when we vote for all the new regional coordinators. Then people can stand for a region or other Board post if interested. However there are qualifications such as having a minimum of two years membership. I won't be standing again so all three European posts will be up for offer. I can give you information about being a coordinator if you are interested.

Cardiff 2015 is well under way with the planning. Insp Nicky Flowers from South Wales Police is leading a great team, some of whom came to Durban, but more will be coming to Canada as we will be running a host evening and the stall in the exhibition area. See the websites for more details:
CARDIFF - www.iawp2015.org
WINNIPEG - www.iawp2014.org
If you have any ideas for training in Cardiff, please send me details - julia@iawp2015.org . We are already looking at bringing in new topics and speakers. All suggestions gratefully received.

In March we have IAWP participating for the first time in the UN's Commission for the Security of Women. President Jane Townsley, 2nd Vice President Stephanie Harding and I with the Committee of the UK branch of the UN Women Association are running a seminar on Policewomen working internationally as a side event. This is a great honour to be asked to participate as many, many groups apply to participate. So to be asked at our first attempt is amazing. We are hoping to have a social event with members from Region 2 as well. The date is 12th March at the Armenian Centre in New York. SO please come if you are in town then!

Later we have the Early Board Meeting in Las Vegas from 22nd and 23rd March. If you have any items you want bringing to the Board attention, please forward to me ASAP. The local region are following on with a 2 day regional training conference. All this takes place in the Gold Coast Hotel. Full details on http://www.iawp.org/training/march2014.

Next deadline for magazine articles is 1st February. Not long, but any ideas as well as your own writings are welcome. Just write to me or to Simon Townsley (editor) and copy to me. His email is scmtownsley@blueyonder.co.uk . Any other news can be included in the blog - just send it to me.

Don't forget to look at the website and the firsst two IAWP resolutions that are being publicised - our stance on human trafficking and female genital mutilation. These are important stances and the tragic effects they have on people world wide are becoming more and more evident. Lets support IAWP and the fight against both.

In the UK together with BAWP we've also been working with a TV researcher to put together sufficient material for a documentary on the history of UK Policewomen., We celebrate a 100 years of British Policewomen in 2015 as well as IAWP's centenary and it would be fantastic of this project goes ahead. In March BAWP launches Gender Agenda 3, the third part of a project maximising women in the UK Police. Many people know of 1 and 2 because I as well as jane and Carol Thomas, have spoken about it and seen other countries such as WPON in South East Europe develop their own Gender Agenda. We will pubilicise its findings after the launch.

Congratulations to the European Network of Policewomen for re-launching and getting a new President - Montserrat Pina Martínez from Barcelona Local Police. The website is www.enp.nl. They hope to celebrate 25 years of ENP in September this year.

I hope this is all of interest to you, but I'd love to include your news too. So please send me items to include or publicise. Best Wishes for 2014 and hope to see you in Winnipeg.

I hope this finds you well and enjoying summer wherever you are in Europe ( or beyond!). If you are coming to conference in Durban I hope you have your place registered, your hotel room reserved and you flight booked. There will be quite a big delegation from the UK this time. As well as the UK Board members like me and Jane Townsley, there will be at least 6 from the Cardiff 2015 Planning team and IAWP award winners ! Come and join us - its not too late to register.

Since my last blog I have obviously been busy with Cardiff plans - they are coming on a treat. Have you seen the website yet? Go to www.iawp2015.org. We are promising a centenary event like no other!!!! Be there or be square!

We have new members from the UK as well as Germany following the Hannover mini- conference. Welcome ladies. Please keep in touch and come to conference as soon as you can ! If you have a friend who's not sure about joining why not buy them a membership for their birthday or Christmas present? Also, why not think of adopting a cop from another nation so someone else can join who couldn't afford membership otherwise? Go to main IAWP website for details.

In June I was facilitating the awards at the annual British Association of Women in Policing Awards in Cardiff at the Mercure Hotel. (One of the conference facilities we were testing out!) What a fabulous group of ladies receiving their awards for lifetime achievement as well as leadership, bravery and community service amongst others. All our awards are based on the IAWP awards and so we forward all the winners to IAWP for their awards. As I hinted, several will be Durban having been successfully selected to receive IAWP awards too. We submit every year, but I have not yet received any other award nominations from other Europeans. Come on ladies, there must be someone you know of who deserves an IAWP award. They don't have to be a member to be nominated. If you don't know how to nominate, please contact me. Its very easy and I am more than happy to help you.

My Board report will be published soon and although its not as busy this time, I want to hear from you about what IAWP could do for you in your region or country. The European Network of Policewomen has relaunched and they have an interesting website at http://www.enp.nl/. If you can't some to Durban, how about this event from ENP:-

Yes I know its not Europe, but I am here with the IAWP Board for this year's Early Board meeting(s). Most of the Board are attending and those who have already arrived are on a coach trip with Patsy and some of the Trinidad & Tobago Women Police Association members. A few like me are still in the hotel preparing for the Board meetings starting tomorrow.

Here's a brief overview of European news since my last entry. Kosovo are waiting for the official registration process of their Association of Women Police to be completed and then they will arrange a launch ceremony. Excellent news as this will help raise their roles, status and careers in the Kosovo Police. Many thanks to UN Women Kosovo for setting up this project.

Hannover, Germany hosted a mini conference again led by Heike Rothenburger, local Police chaplain. So good to meet new delegates from Germany as well as Estonia, UK and Kyrgysztan. They must have the bug for conferences as talk is of a future bid to host the IAWP conference there. Wow, another European bid? Special mention of Jutta Baumgarten, former region Coordinator, who travelled all the way from Afghanistan to be present. That is dedication!

Cardiff 2015 are busy planning ahead for our centenary conference. As a practise run, we are hosting the British Association of Women in Policing annual Awards as a luncheon on June 11th. Followed by a mini-Professional Development Conference. A great day to recognise the excellent work of our UK winners, of whom half come from the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Their dedication and achievements are amazing.

Are you planning to come to Durban in September? Don't be shy, everyone has a first conference, but its always an amazing experience. A senior officer from the UK attending last year's as a speaker, tolf =d me he had never been to a conference like it because it so impressed him. looking forward to seeing you in durban hopefully.

Well its 4 months since I last wrote which is disgraceful! Sorry, but IAWP life for me has been very busy. First of all there was conference in St Johns. Wow did we journey to the edge! I actually managed to visit the most easterly spot of N.America in the weeks holiday after conference. And all I could see was water.

Conference was brilliantly organised by Sue Bill from Newfoundland Constabulary and Colleen Fox from the RCMP. Over 760 delegates experienced fabulous weather, many and varied seminars, the famous opening ceremony and the Awards luncheon, a great social life ( do those South African ladies know how to organise a party?) and even a tropical storm that put the lights out on Tuesday for awhile. Did it bother us? No we just carried on in the dark with torches.

With the Olympics and paralympics just ending it was good to see 10 delegates form the UK make it to St Johns. Special mention to England's DCI Shab Chaudri and Mrs Amy Parsons who were IAWP award winners. Amy couldn't make it as she is expecting twins at the beginning of November. So her line manager, Det. Inspector Andy Maxfield came instead to collect her award. He still says it was the best report he ever wrote because Amy won two awards and he got to come to Canada and collect one of them for her. Why don't you consider nominating someone for an award? Have a look at the testimonies on the website and see if you can think of someone in your Force who deserves international recognition.

The AGM (sorry longest one in history I believe) saw the UK successfully win the bid to host the 2015 conference in Cardiff, Wales. This is especially important because it is the centenary of IAWP being founded in 1915. We promise a great conference to celebrate the past as well as training for the future. The conference co-coordinators are myself and Carolyn Williamson from BAWP. The local Force is South Wales Police and they have a very proactive women's network who are already working hard to plan a conference to beat all others! This is only the third time it will have been held in Europe and so make it a must for you and your European colleagues already. The dates are August 22nd-27th 2015. Plenty of time to start saving for it. Or how about delivering a seminar? let me know anytime if you have a special topic that would be of interest top other officers globally and we'll try to include you in the programme. We don't want just British lecturers.

I followed conference with the Post Conference tour. A 6 day coach trip around some beautiful locations including the first inhabited town in Canada, a site for a native village over a 1000 years old, some attractive and colourful villages, many lighthouses along the rocky coast, and a boat trip around one of the beautiful bays. It was a great way to wind down after conference and I can thoroughly recommend these trips as you are with some conference friends and seeing the sights together. Enjoy!

Coming back to the UK, I had a weekend in which to unpack, do the washing and pack again to attend a two day seminar in Brussels on the role of Women's Staff Associations in the Security sector. A role performed by both BAWP and IAWP. There were delegates from Serbia, Liberia, Canada, Sierra Leone and Senegal too. All experiencing difficulties with their associations being taken seriously. Another reason to affiliate with IAWP as there is strength in numbers. One topic that kept recurring was sexual harassment in the work place. No one should suffer at any time and if you are a victim, please report it to your Force or to your staff association so they can take up the fight on your behalf. IAWP is thinking of ways to make this known to all Forces or as many as we can.

I look forward to hearing from you. What's goign on in your region? Can I include it in the blog? Next year in Hanover, Germany from 18th - 20th, there will be another mini-conference organised by their Police Academy and Chaplaincy. For more information go to www.kirchlicher-dienst-in-pz.de

Best regards,

Well the UK has been really busy since I last wrote. First of all there was the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the beginning of the month. 4 days of celebrations viewed worldwide through TV and the Internet. I walked along the river bank the day before the Pageant to see some of the historic boats moored awaiting the big procession the next day. Amazing - 1000 boats to process down the River Thames. Then there was the Monday concert and the Tuesday service of celebration. All events included many women officers in the security details. Well done ladies.

Now we await the Olympics and London is already buzzing. The huge rings are on display at Heathrow as well as Tower Bridge so every visitor knows whats about to happen. Every where you go in London are free events as part of the Festival of London. Wimbledon tennis is running for the next 2 weeks. Amazing sport, but lots of cultural events too.

Alicia also leaves 2 children. Both women were doing their duty and will be awarded the Legion d'Honneur and Military medal for their sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and colleagues.

Don't forget you still have time to apply for conference and we'ed love to see you there. Don't worry if its your first time. It certainly won't be the last! Full details in the magazine that's just been sent out.
Congratulations to Det. Chief Inspector Shab Chaudri of the Metropolitan Police for being selected to receive the Leadership Award and Amy Parsons from Stafforshire Police who will receive the Civilian Achievement award. She works in criminal intelligence. Shab is planning to be with us in Newfoundland to collect her award, but unfortunatly Amy can't travel as she is expecting twins! A year of doubles for her as she has achieved 2 awards for her work from both BAWP & IAWP and now she's expecting twins! How does she do it?

Next year lets see some entries from other European countries. Nominees don't have to be members and I canalways give you advice on how to write someone up.
Fully reporting on our historic visit to Abu Dhabi & Bangladesh. The cover girl is none other than our Swedish colleague, Janna Davidson, who joined IAWP at the Hannover conference last year. Great work with an orphanage in her spare time whilst serving on a UN Mission! She needs our financial support if you feel able to give.

There's a spotlight on Norwegian colleague Ann-Kristin Kvilekval from Norway as well as our 2 previous European Scholarship winners - Edlira Zoto from Albania and Maka Malatsidze from Georgia. So if you have something interesting to say, why not contact the editor, Simon Townsley and get writing for the next edition? We'd love to read all about you!

Not forgetting to get your bookings in this month for the Newfoundland conference in September. It promises to be brilliant. Early bird fees are still available. See you there?IAWP Region 13http://www.blogger.com/profile/13061266811798361233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575709961996259965.post-4080753998205205832012-03-18T15:08:00.002-07:002012-03-18T16:01:20.904-07:00Spring 2012Dear everyone,

Its March and the UK is showing lots of signs of spring. I hope so too wherever you are. Since last writing, we are now in a New Year and here in the UK its a momentous year as we celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee ( 60 years) and then the Olympics. Even though I am retired I am still involved with the Olympics as I am an Ambassador team manager. Volunteers who meet and greet visitors to our great capital.

Meanwhile I've been busy with the IAWP Board. At the end of February Jane & Simon Townsley, Carol Thomas and I from England together with nearly 20 other Board members from USA, Canada and Australia went to Abu Dhabi to participate in their first ever Policewomen's conference. Some of us were teaching and some assisting with recruiting new members. But we were all networking and meeting some amazing new friends.

Over 400 female officers came from all 7 Emirates, Oman, Jordan and Iraq. We started with an enormous opening ceremony held at the Emirates Palace hotel. A very prestigious glitzy hotel. Wow! This was followed by two days of training focusing mainly on gender issues. Most of the delegates attended both days and said how much they appreciated the training. The UK Policing advisor I spoke to said he had never seen such a well attended training day and how appreciative the attendees were. All seemed keen to ask us back in the near future.

We then had a couple of days relaxation when we were taken to see the biggest mosque in the world, a trip out to the dessert and a day in Dubai. Suitably refreshed, but sad to leave our new friends, we all then flew together to Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, to join the Bangladesh Policewomen's network for their first conference, but only after our own IAWP Board's 2 day early board meeting. We debated many topics, accounts and reports. This is especially significant this year as its election year. I am standing unopposed to continue representing you and continuing the work we have already started in Europe and world wide. Please vote when you receive your ballot papers in June. If you need help, please email me for advice, but I strongly recommend we need all the current board to continue and maintain the momentum of their projects.

Back to Dhaka, which was very, very different from Abu Dhabi, but not the enthusiasm of the ladies there. We stayed in the police Staff college which is where all the meetings were held. Apart from the opening ceremony where we moved over to a hotel and heard speeches from our president as well as the Bangladeshi networks' President. Then several senior civil servants, the Minister for Women & Children and finally, the Home Secretary herself. As in the Emirates, this shows how much the government supported IAWP as well as their Policewomen.

Both conferences will be written about and include plenty of photos in the next magazine, but if you want more info' now I recommend the Chaplain's blog and region 12s blog too. So an exciting start to the year. I look forward to hearing from you in the coming months. If you have some news you want to share, please forward it to me ASAP. If you are riot trained or a firearms officer and don't mine featuring in a UN magazine focusing on European women in security, please let me know so I can arrange for your interview.

And finally, don't forget the St John's conference in September. We'd love to see you there. As there will be few UK members there due to Olympic commitments. We want your support as Cardiff, capital of Wales is bidding to host the 2015 conference. A local venue for Europe. No excuse then if we win the vote. To date no one else is bidding, but that could all change between now and the AGM. I look forward to continue representing you over the next 3 years.

Best regards,
JuliaIAWP Region 13http://www.blogger.com/profile/13061266811798361233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575709961996259965.post-55363157343857984802011-11-15T15:33:00.000-08:002011-11-15T15:52:47.352-08:00Very late update!Dear Region 13 members, I may have been quiet onthe blog, but have certainly been busy with IAWP business. Firstly the President and Secretary or the Kyrgyzstan Policeowmen's network came to London in September on a fact finding tour of the role of Policewomen in London. I drew up a very full programme including visits to the world famous Metropolitan Police training School at Hendon, the Met' Police Complaints Unit, Hammermsith Police Station, meetings with Representatives from the Police federation and the British Association of Women in Police. Then Jane Townsley arranged for them to visit the Counter Terroriam Unit at her force, the British Transport Police. Both the ladies were highly impressed with everyone they met.

As a result, Jane & I were invited back to Kyrgyzstan later in October to help them celebrate their network's first anniversary. It was an amazing visit. They took us up into the mountains for sightseeing and a meal. We spent time in their academy where we were both awarded the Academy's highest medal before going off to a banquet with dancers in national costumes! The following day was the actual celebration, held in a marble hall with a huge crystal chandelier. Clearly the network is highly valued with delegates attending from government as well as NGOs such as the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe who are supporting them getting off the ground. They received their certificate of affiliation from Jane and in return everyone involved in their committee - including Jane & I- got a medal from the Deputy Minister of the Interior. Wow - meals & medals everywhere we went. See the next magazine for more pictures and a fuller article.

So whats happening in your work? Pass the news to me and I will publicise it here on the blog.

All the best, JuliaIAWP Region 13http://www.blogger.com/profile/13061266811798361233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575709961996259965.post-69478399805750145942011-08-29T15:26:00.000-07:002011-08-29T15:36:26.002-07:00Lexington ConferenceHi everybody, I'm back from conference and had a great time with over 400 delegates from all over the world. All our award winners came excpet for Phyllis who was too ill to travel, but she hopes to join us in Newfoundland next year. So if you didn't come this year, please start planning for next as the ladies fromSt John's are planning hard for an enjoyable time. You can fly direct from Heathrow, but not sure where else from in Europe.

Lots of pictures will be in the next magazine!
